Success with social media can be whittled down to one sentence. Remember the “social” in social media.
Be human online. Talk to your customers. Learn about why they enjoy your product. Talk about how you personally use it, and show how other customers use it.
Imagine there’s a party. There’s a guy in flashy clothes shouting above the whole party, bragging about boating with Tom Cruise. He dominates every conversation he’s in. “You guys like the band Pearl Jam? Well I’ve got a story for you…”
You - “Oh well, I really like Eddie Vedder’s voice…”
Boom! Sleazy dude cuts you off to talk about himself again.
Don’t be that guy. No one wants to be in a one-sided conversation. Ask your audience about themselves. Skip the laborious small talk. Find out what they care about in life and discuss how your product can help with their problems. Entertain them. Tell them an emotional story. Make them laugh. Above all, the audience should feel like they are part of the conversation.
With an engaging conversation, customers line up in a queue to share their opinions. This builds a loyal following if you listen and engage with their conversations. This also lets audiences feel like they are part of a community. The more value you give them, the more they share your product or service with friends or family.
Without engaging with customers online, social media is useless.
